\u201cT\u00f3rshavn\u2019s harbour has served this community for centuries. It has welcomed fishing boats, ferries, travellers, and trade. And more recently, we have had the pleasure of receiving research vessels from across the world. These visits are not only welcome \u2013 they are of great importance. They connect our remote islands to a wider world of science and shared responsibility. Our own Faroese research vessel, J\u00e1kup Sverri,<\/em> also plays a vital role in this, reflecting the Faroe Islands\u2019 identity as an ocean nation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHere in T\u00f3rshavn, we too are working to build a more sustainable future. As a municipality, we have placed sustainability and research at the centre of our development. We are investing in cleaner energy, greener transport, smarter urban planning, and in support for science and education. We see research not as something that happens elsewhere, but as something that begins here at home \u2013 with local commitment, clear values, and a willingness to change for the better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur harbour is a key part of that effort, as they have joined the Environmental Port Index (EPI)\u2014an initiative that encourages more sustainable shipping by monitoring the environmental performance of visiting vessels. It is a small but meaningful step towards cleaner seas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis approach naturally extends to the wider ocean. We understand that we cannot protect the sea without also rethinking how we live alongside it. That is why sustainable fishing, marine conservation, and ocean research are not just areas of interest\u2014they ought to be priorities. And in this work, the Municipality wants to stand with the international community, learning from others and contributing what we can.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Faroese people have always held a deep understanding of the sea. We have learned its rhythms, respected its strength, and depended on its gifts. Today, that relationship is evolving. We are not simply users of the ocean\u2014we are stewards of it. And we believe that knowledge, cooperation, and humility are the most powerful tools we have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
