This could become one of the most damaging interventions in the North Atlantic marine ecosystem in modern times. We have already seen what happened to the wild salmon stocks, which in many regions are now almost gone. Salmon farming has had a direct negative impact through genetic pollution, disease, and large-scale escapes where farmed salmon mix with wild populations.<br>Faroese shipowner \u00d3li M. Lassen says in a short interview with 24fo.news that cod farming must be stopped now \u2014 because once the damage is done, it cannot be reversed. He stresses that shipowners\u2019 associations, environmental organisations, local communities and towns that depend on fisheries must put an end to this madness. \u201cThis is not just a business issue \u2014 it is a question about the future of one of the most important stocks in the North Atlantic,\u201d Lassen says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Genetic pollution: Farmed cod can weaken the wild stock<\/strong><br>Research shows that cod raised in dense aquaculture conditions rapidly loses natural traits. This includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reduced resistance to disease<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Altered body shape and reduced muscle strength<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lower survival ability in the wild<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Undesirable genetic changes that can spread<br>If farmed cod escape and mix with wild cod, the damage to the genetic integrity of the stock can last for generations \u2014 or forever. This is exactly what happened with salmon, and it must not be repeated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Disease and parasite pressure: A problem that cannot be controlled<\/strong><br>Cod farming has already shown serious problems with bacterial infections, parasites, and stress\u2011related diseases. These pathogens do not stay inside the cages \u2014 they spread into fjords and open waters where wild cod migrate and spawn.<br>Fishing pressure can be regulated.<br>Genetic and biological damage cannot be undone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The risk of collapse is real<\/strong><br>Wild cod is already under pressure from warming seas, changing ocean conditions, and historical overfishing. Adding a new, untested and high\u2011risk industry on top of this could be what finally breaks the stock.<br>A collapse would have international consequences \u2014 from the UK to Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Russia and the Faroe Islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>International responsibility: A ban must be imposed now<\/strong><br>The cod stock crosses borders, and therefore the responsibility is shared.
